U.S.–European Relations in the Shadow of China – Professor Hall Gardner at the John Lukacs Institute for Strategy and Politics

On October 27, 2025, the John Lukacs Institute for Strategy and Politics held a closed expert discussion with Professor Hall Gardner, a renowned scholar of international relations and Professor Emeritus at The American University of Paris. Professor Gardner is visiting Hungary as a research fellow invited by the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs.

The discussion focused on “U.S.–European Economic and Political Relations in the Shadow of China,” examining one of today’s most pressing geopolitical challenges. Ten experts participated in the workshop, including researchers from the John Lukacs Institute for Strategy and Politics  as well as scholars from other universities and research institutions.

Participants discussed how China’s growing economic, technological, and political presence in Europe affects U.S. interests and the transatlantic partnership. They also addressed how China’s role in Europe may influence political and security relations with the United States and explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in trade, technology, and defense.

The conversation was inspired by Professor Gardner’s latest book, Toward an Alternative Transatlantic Strategy (2021), which proposes alternative approaches to renewing transatlantic strategic cooperation in an era of great-power competition.
