Hungarian-Japanese Geopolitical Dialogue

The Directorate General for International Affairs of the Ludovika University of Public Service (LUPS) in cooperation with John Lukacs Institute for Strategy and Politics organized a roundtable discussion featuring Hungarian and Japanese experts on March 27 in the university’s Zrínyi Hall. The event focused on various aspects of East Asian geopolitics, with particular emphasis on Sino-Japanese relations, and EU-Asia dimension.

Participants examined the evolving security landscape in East Asia, paying particular attention to regional dynamics and the complex relationship between Japan and China. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, experts underscored China’s continued importance as a critical economic and trade partner, both regionally and globally. In particular, they noted the European Union’s dependence on Chinese components in sectors such as energy, suggesting a need for nuanced policy recalibration that respects the national interests of EU member states.

The discussion then shifted to the specific situations of individual East Asian countries. Experts pointed out that China's dominance in various industries, particularly in wind turbine production, makes it difficult for other nations to compete or find viable alternatives. The conversation also touched on the emerging new world order and the role of East Asian countries in the restructuring of global economic and defense power dynamics. In these rapidly changing times, ensuring economic stability is crucial for all nations. As mentioned by the experts, prioritizing connectivity over confrontation is key to achieving this goal.

Security challenges affecting the East Asian region were also a focal point of the roundtable discussion. The experts analyzed issues such as North Korea’s situation, the impact of international cooperations on the region, and various border disputes.

The panelists also highlighted Hungary’s diplomatic position, emphasizing that despite challenges, the country has successfully established strong economic ties with East Asian nations. They pointed out Hungary’s unique advantages and how its diverse international collaborations and diplomatic openness have enabled it to secure significant economic benefits.

In conclusion, the roundtable was recognized as a productive platform for meaningful exchange. Participants expressed strong support for continued dialogue and cooperation between Hungarian and Japanese experts on issues of shared strategic interest.
